Obviously, fresher is better. But most of us can’t go to the Farmer’s Market every day, so it’s important to know how long foods will keep — and the best ways to store them.
Enter Still Tasty, a cool, informative, and to-the-point website all about food storage and shelf-life. You can use the search tool if you have questions about specific foods, or just poke around in their Q&A articles.
Some things I learned in just a few minutes:
Yes, you can safely store Ketchup and Mustard for a loooong time in the fridge. (After about 6 to 12 months, however, it may not taste as good.)
Their secrets to keeping fruit luscious.
Soy Sauce does indeed keep best in the fridge.
The Tofu we ate last night was a few days too many past the “sell by” date (but we’re feeling fine today, so I think we’re in the clear…).
They also have a StillTasty iPhone App (iTunes link), but I haven’t tried it yet. Their “Alert Me” function sounds nifty — your phone will tell you when your food has expired! As if the mold growing on it wasn’t a good enough indicator…
Do you have any pearls of widsom on food shelf life?
