Milling Flax Seeds

Making Flaxseed Meal at Bob's Red Mill

A couple of weeks ago I was chatting with my friend Cassidy at Bob’s Red Mill, and she kindly offered to sponsor another great giveaway. Longtime readers will already know that I’m a fan (and Bob’s is an Eating Rules sponsor), and if you missed my behind-the-scenes tour of their facility last year, you should definitely click over and check it out.

As I mentioned last week when I asked you what favorite foods you discovered in 2011, my “new-to-me” food last year was Hulled Hemp Seeds. So when we started brainstorming which products to offer up in the giveaway, and I mentioned my newfound love of hemp seeds, we came upon the idea of doing an “Omega-3 Three-Pack.”  And for good measure, we’re going to give away three of ‘em!

So to start your new year off right, three lucky winners will receive one bag each of Bob’s Red Mill Hulled Hemp Seeds, Chia Seeds, and Ground Flax Seeds.  It’s the Omega-3 Trifecta! (With lots of fiber, too!)

Hemp, Chia, Flax Trifecta!

The Hemp, Chia, and Flax Trifecta!

Chia seed “pudding” — chia seeds with coconut milk, a little cardamom, cinnamon, and nutmeg, and maple agave syrup. The chia seeds soak up tons of moisture, thickening the coconut milk so this ends up tasting totally comfort food-y when it’s secretly so, so good for you!

I add flax meal to smoothies, on top of yogurt, and in oatmeal. Or I’ll mix it into peanut butter and put that in a pb&j.

Kimchi is hardly a new taste for me, but after reading Wild Fermentation by Sandor Katz, I made a batch of Kimchi, and now I constantly have a batch going to keep me supplied. I love the crunchiness and spiciness of this “pickle” and add it to sandwiches or just have it on the side. The boost to your immune system is an added plus, and I stayed healthy all year.

I love making crackers and flatbreads with my favorite ingredients, such as whole grain flours, chia, flax and hemp seeds. I also use flaxseed meal and many other seeds. I like to brush the top and add more seeds. Yum. Nothing is so satifying to have with soup, salad, or just by itself.

These are wonderful products I have seen for many years, finally I am using Bob’s Red Mill products everyday, breakfast, lunch & dinner. We don’t end up throwing food away because it is good and we can always freeze extras when I make breads, muffins, cookies, etc. There is no waste and we like the health benefits as we are starting to notice we have more vitality and energy than our kids. We are trying to get them going the same positive direction to chose better for their health!!!

Ive recently gotten into baking – I would like to be able to experiment with some of these ingredients in that way. I already buy the flax seeds for smoothies – they are really tasty though so sometimes I just throw them on a salad or even on a slice of herbed bread with some olive oil. Im sort of addicted to them. Id like to try out the hemp seeds though – havent seen them in my local markets.

I love BRMill. I stumbled upon his site as I was trying new healthier recipes last year.
I’m not exactly sure what I’d use these for, but I am off to research incorporating them.
I use milled flax seeds in all my breads (just add about 1/4 cup or so to any recipe and it healths it up.

ANyway – thanks for the chance to win! You’re a dear. I’m off to read your blog now.
Tell BRM thanks. Their FB page is telling us all to come here..

My favorite latest discovery is flax muffins: you can make one in a coffee mug in the microwave in 1-2 minutes, by combining 1/4 cup ground flax seeds, 1/2 t. baking powder, 1 t. cinnamon, 1 egg and 1 tsp. butter or coconut oil. Microwave on high. Or, of course, you can make a bigger batch in ordinary muffin pans in the oven. Low carb, gluten free, delicious….
